Emergence of New Antibiotics
Tim Sandle*

The growing menace of antibiotic resistance is, arguably, the single biggest threat faced by the world's population. However, in May and June 2014 a change in direction has occurred with the announcement of two new antibiotics. The two drugs represent the first new antibiotics to emerge for several years, and both should be available to the medical community by the end of 2014.

Farshad Golshani , Shahla Sahraei*, Mehdi Hassanshahian and Zahra Sepehri

Medicinal plants play a major role in all the traditional system of medicine and contain the rich source of natural products. Most of which have been used for human welfare especially to cure disease caused by pathogenic microorganisms without any side effects.

Respiratory Manifestations of Humoral Primary Immunodeficiencies

Pérsio Roxo-Junior*, Hélio Miguel Lopes Simão

Primary immunodeficiencies comprise a genetically heterogeneous group of rare disorders that are caused by genetic defects or developmental defects of the immune system.  The most typical manifestations are recurrent infections, but other associated conditions can also be observed, such as severe allergic reactions, asthma, lymphoid hematopoietic neoplasia, autoimmune diseases, chronic inflammatory bowel disease and endocrinopathies.

Laboratory-Acquired Brucella melitensis Infection in Jiangsu, 2013

Zhongming Tan, Jun Zhang, Weizhong Zhou, Hong Ji, Changjun Bao, Fenyang Tang, Yefei Zhu*

We report a  laboratory-acquired  Brucella melitensis  infection from Yangzhou city,  Jiangsu Province, China,2013.  Epidemiological investigation  found that a laboratory technician (Case 1) and a patient (Case 2) were related.Laboratory confirmation of cases was made by detection of B. melitensis genes bcsp-31 and IS711 using polymerase chain reaction; source tracking was conducted by multiple loci variable nucleotide tandem repeat (VNTR) analysis (MLVA).

The Role of Dendritic Cells During HCV Infection

Li Zhao*

Hepatitis C virus is a highly mutable RNA virus that exists in patient blood as quasispecies, a population of dynamic strains closely related to each other. It is primarily transmitted by contaminated blood, and the major host cell supporting HCV replication is the human hepatocyte. In the natural course of HCV infection, more than 75% of patients develop chronic hepatitis after acute infection. Strong, multi-faceted and sustained T-cell responses are essential for HCV clearance.

Developing Allometric Models for Carbon Stock Estimation in Eighteen Year Old Plantation Forests of Bangladesh
Mohammad Rahmat Ullah*, Gouri Rani Banik,RajibBanik

The aim of the study was to estimate carbon stock of 18-year old plantation (Acacia auriculiformis, Anthocephalus chinensis and Tectona grandis) and to develop allometric models. Systematic sampling method was used in the study to identify each sampling point through Global Positioning System (GPS). Loss of ignition and Walkley-Black Oxidation methods were used in the study to estimate tree biomass and soil carbon stock, respectively. Result depicted that the total carbon stock was highest 211.09 ton/ha in fast growing Acacia auriculiformis plantation.

Contamination of X-Ray Cassettes with MRSA during Portable X-Ray Examination
Christopher W.K. LAI*, Polly H.M. LEUNG and Helen K. W. LAW

The patient-contact surface of X-ray cassettes used “within” the X-ray department was contaminated with bacteria, and the most common  bacterium found was  Staphylococcus aureus. To the best of authors’ knowledge, similar study on “portable X-ray examination” in the hospital environment has not been studied. To perform surveillance cultures of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus and bacteria on the patient-contact and non-patient-contact surfaces of X-ray cassette during portable X-ray examination.
